Local Culture
U’mista Cultural Centre

Standing over 170 feet tall, Alert Bay’s iconic totem pole is one of the community’s most recognizable landmarks. Located beside the ‘Na̱mg̱is Big House, it’s an impressive photo stop and a symbol of the island’s rich culture.

These grounds are renowned for their memorial totem poles, many of which remain in their original location. The site reflects generations of Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw history, with some poles carefully maintained while others are allowed to naturally return to the earth. As this is a sacred and active burial site, please view it respectfully from the roadside only and do not enter the grounds.
